Hi, I'm going to be in Yosemite for 2 night in August (6/7) and can't get a camping (tent) spot in any of the site insisde the park....
Has anyone got any recommendations of decent campsites outside and near the park entrance?
I've found one 'KOA' campsite in Mariposa.. Anyone know if this is okay?
Thanks.

Don't know. Usually KOA campgrounds are in ugly areas--a farmers field with no trees. Midpines (where the KOA is located) is heavily forested though. Here's some reviews from yelp and tripadvisor.com:

Here's a thread on 2 Forest Service Campgrounds just outside the park near El Portal:

Those reviews didn't look to hot! Thanks for the reply... I've looked at Dirt Flat and Dry Gulch but no availability....
I've now emailed Indian flat Campsite in the hope they can help...
Fingers crossed!

Sorry to say that Indian Flat has worse reviews than the KOA. \

Of course, these are from the perspective of an RVer, so a tenter might be happy there.
Here are the KOA reviews on that site:

The first come first serve campsites in the park. There is camp 4 in the valley and bridal veil too. I think there are more and if you arrive during the week your chances will be better.
Here is the link for the FCFS campsites.

Good luck!

Grew up not too far from Yosemite so know a little about the area. You may want to camp near Briceburg, an old hang out spot off the 140. Beautiful river and plenty of swimming holes (try the Octagon for cliff jumping). Just look up the Merced River Recreation Area for more information. If you plan to go in the 120, there's plenty of camping along that route before you enter the Valley.

These sound better to me than KOA but can't find a lot on it.. plus i need to call (from UK) to try to book...
so... any offers or reviews before i try?!

They must be new. I never heard of them before. Midpines is a nice area--it's heavily forested and relatively close to the stores and restaurants in Mariposa (an old mining town, now a little touristy). I would try them out.
It's about a 1 hour drive between the campground and Yosemite Valley, according to Google Maps:

Every time I've driven past the KOA in Midpines it has been a sea of RVs as far back as you can see from the Hwy.
KOA...

Just to let you know that the KOA campsite was great. It is more like a hotel without the walls but all the amenities.... If your looking for 'wild' camping then its prob not for you but as a stop off we thought it was fine.
The RV's are all in one area and there is a separate tent area.... Overall i would recommend it. Only about 45minutes from Yosemite Valley too!
