Where to put grill and cooking utensils

Postby c52k » Sat Mar 28, 2015 9:42 pm

Hi,

it's been quite a few years since I camped at Yosemite and this is the first time i'm in charge of food and most of the supplies. I would like to bring my Coleman grill but don't know if it's overkill. Is it advised to store the grill and other cooking supplies in the bear lockers? If so I think my grill may be too big. This is the grill I have http://amzn.to/1Mi8Rrz

Thanks!

I have the same grill. Best car camping purchase ever, I have the griddle and stove top attachments too so I can use it for all my cooking needs. You don't need to store it in the bear box. A bear might sniff at it but he won't destroy it. Clean it after you use it and I make sure to leave mine unlatched in case they want to open it to investigate. That way they aren't smashing it open. I think I have been awakened by a bear bumping it around once in 15 years. They investigated, discovered there was nothing to eat and moved on to the next site.

Enjoy!!!

If there's food, garbage, a scent, or it's at all unwashed and used in any way for food prep, by definition under federal regulations it's considered a food item that really should be stored properly in a locker if at all possible. This definition even specifically includes clean and empty ice chests.

Update: Scent is unavoidable, that's not the issue. Even my canister smells. But the technicalities of what is defined as food, a scented item, or is used for food prep aside, no, even though they would prefer you to store your grill in the locker, they're not going to make you do it. It's still a matter of the circumstances and the individual ranger's discretion though. I guess everyone should be happy that I'm not working as a ranger then...the letter of the law and spirit of the law sometimes get lost on us righteous purists...food is food, be it cookies or bacon grease, it's all calories to a bear, but it's still a long way from nuts and berries.....kids that never eat candy never understand its joys, and bears that never know human food wouldn't be any different, except for us. And human negligence, as innocent as it might be, is also why the squirrels on the Pizza Deck are obese.

We have been car camping in the valley for 20 years and I have never, nor has anyone in our group ever packed a grille in the Bear Box. Not one ranger or host has ever said a word and I have had them in our camp. If your argument is that the scent is attracting bears to the campground, the scent is there whether it is in a bear box or not. The bears return because they have had success GETTING food not so much smelling food. Your goal is to deny a bear from getting food, not smelling food. And you CAN leave coolers out if you have to if they are empty and left open. In fact you are better off leaving an empty cooler out than in a car because bears recognize coolers as a food source by sight as well.
