This sounds crazy.

I have a backcountry permit for the 21st, but we wanted to arrive on the 19th and relax in teh valley for a day. I was in the park 10 years ago and we got a valley site no problem, arriving in the evening with no reservation. Not the case anymore?

It this a lot of worry over nothing or will we really and truly be screwed if we get there on Sunday afternoon/evening with no reservation? (We can't do backpackers till the 20th).

Thanks.

If you get there in the evening, you'll have less of a chance, but there may be cancellations especially while the fires are burning. The valley was filled with smoke last weekend. The FULL signs are up on every campground I drove past.

There's also camp 4, which packs six campers into each site, but that has been known to fill up as well by the end of the day. You might check the housekeeping tents at Curry, see if there are any available.

Keep checking the website also. They post cancellations throughout the day and I have snagged plenty of last minute sites this way.
