Yosemite Indian photo mysteriously cropped at library.
Posted: Sun Mar 02, 2008 12:12 amOne of the most important photos recording Yosemite Native American history is this one below that is located in the Yosemite Research Library in Yosemite National Park.
This photo was like a copy given to one of our Paiute elders who was visiting the Yosemite Research Library a couple of years ago. They had recognized the photo and were surprised it did not have a title of the photo on it.
This photo has been used in some Yosemite National Park, Yosemite Association and Yosemite Fund publications about the "Miwoks" of Yosemite.
The photo located at the Yosemite Research Library did have the photographer's name the famous English photographer Edweard Muybridge, but the title was mysteriously cut off. We wondered why the title of this photo was missing? We knew the title was right on the photo.
With a little research we found the original photo that was given to the Yosemite Research Library courtesy of the Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley. So some of our people went to the Bancroft Library to research the origins of this photo.

Notice the title that is ETCHED ON THE PHOTO. So the photo of the Miwok lodge is really a photo by Edweard Muybridge called "Piute Chief's Lodge" no. 1574.
Yet in the Yosemite Research Library the photo is mysteriously missing the title "Piute Chief's Lodge". Why is that?
This is not the only photo that the Bancroft Library gave to Yosemite National Park and the Yosemite Research Library, but those photos still retain their orginal titles, but have been classified as "Miwok", when they are part of the same Edweard Muybridge photo series of his photographs of the same PAIUTE camp in Yosemite Valley.
So it appears that there is some major "funny business" going on at Yosemite National Park Service.
Why was the "Piute Chief's Lodge" title removed from the Muybridge Photo at the Yosemite Research Library that the Bancroft Library gave to them go untitled? Meanwhile at the Bancroft Library the photo still retains the title, why is that?
When you combine this with all the other evidence of "Miwok" manipulation at the Yosemite National Park now you understand why we Paiutes do not have any faith in the Yosemite National Park Service and niether should any of the general public who visit the park.
It appears that Yosemite National Park Service is assisting their friends and co-workers who are applying for federal recognition as the Southern Sierra Miwuk, if not PUT THE TITLE BACK ON THE PHOTO and classify the photo as Paiute, not Miwok.
