Does anyone have firsthand experience with fishing and camping at these locations:

We are probably hiking from Tuolumne to Glen Aulin (Tuolumne River) spending 1-2 nights; then hike to May Lake spending 1-2 nights; then hiking and camp around Tenaya Lake for a night then head back to Tuolumne and out. We have hiked and camped a few other areas of the park but not these spots. Can anyone tell me how the camping and fishing is?

Thanks a lot.

Can't tell you about the fishing, but one thing to know is that the campground at Tenaya Lake was removed years ago, even though it may still show up on some maps. If you look on current maps, the lake is like the valley, you can't camp anywhere but official campsites, so there's no legal camping there any more. To camp near Tenaya you'd need a wilderness permit and even then you could only camp if you're at least a mile from Tioga Road, which means you'd not be very close to the Lake.

Glen Aulin (easy 3 hours from TM) has great camping opportunities but iffy fishing. Just over that little hump (north of the HSC), the river widens and slows - Brookies and 'Bows - 6 - 10 ". Down below GA a few miles, there are a few deep pools holding larger fish but impossible to get to due to rapid surface current. BTW, the falls themselves are worth visiting...Waterwheel, LeConte, and California Falls!

May Lake is another story...larger fish, left side off the big rock and the whole area left backside. Fish deep using lures...orange, red, yellow worked for me. While there, make a point of doing Mt Hoffman - since you are right there/close anyway.

As correctly stated above, no camping at Tenaya - fishing iffy too. Suggest staying at Tuolumne BP (no res needed with a valid permit) and spend a day out on the river near/past Parsons Lodge (<1 mile away)...throw small lures...tons of fun. Using small lures (panther martins and such), or maybe use a fly set up, can snag dozens of smaller fish in a few hours... but the big ones are also in there too.
taut lines!

None of the three area have particularly good fishing. Camping at GA and May Lake themselves is limited to the designated areas of the HSCs. Between GA and May Lake, there are some campsites along the main trail, Cathedral Creek area, Polly Dome Lakes, and Raisin Lake, but those lakes are too shallow and warm and have no fish in them at all.

Also, as mentioned, besides there being no camping available or allowed at Tenaya Lake, unless you backtrack on the Glen Aulin - May Lake Trail and travel the required 1 mile distance out from the HSC there with a plan to exit at Murphy Creek, the moment you leave May Lake's backpacker area headed S/SE towards the Sunrise trailhead/Tenaya Lake, you're in a restricted camping zone for the duration of your hike back down to Tioga Rd. Once you leave May Lake, unless you plan to cross Tioga Rd under approved permit, say headed up towards Sunrise Lakes or Mt Watkins/Snow Creek, you're camping trip is over. Aside from the latter options, the exception being taking your one night post-trip at the Tuolumne Meadows backpackers' camp.
