Best car camping tent?

Postby hikehigh » Fri Jun 26, 2009 5:40 am

Anyone have any recommendations on a good car camping tent? It seems the monster 3 room Costco tents aren't that great in anything but perfect weather. What does everyone use?

I love the smell of deet in the morning.
The smell, you know that deet smell, the whole mountain.
Smelled like... victory.

We just picked up the North Face Trailhead 6 at the loacal REI.
(can't post URL till 3rd post, Google it.)

I got a huge tent for a couple of reasons. Mainly I want the wife to be comfortable. She went and bought 2 double high single air matresses and we had to upsize the tent to make them fit. Also, I thought it might be nice to finally be able to stand up in the tent to put my pants on.

This tent has a 'vestibule' area with the rain fly on, which made for a nice area to put out astroturf and keep the shoes outside. I also think that this tent will be nice to have on those occasional summer rainy days, it's so big we could put up a table and play cards/games.

We used this tent a few weeks ago in the local SoCal mtns, and I really like the setup. It was kind of cold overnight, I think I will have to take the tent heater next time. I don't mind using it in a tent this size, no fear of knocking it over.

I've never been a big fan of the huge tent, looks a little too trailer park to me. I kept my small Kelty for those quick trips when, fishing with Dad, etc...

They also have the TH 8, which is even bigger, we almost got that, but when we saw the 6 set up, it was plenty big enough.
