We are staying in SF in September and wanted to do a day trip to Yosemite. It sounds much better to rent a convertible for the trip vs. taking a group tour. How long is the drive from SF to Yosemite and would be it be difficult to easily find the tourist hot spots? Where could I find complete directions with an itinerary, etc?

My step-daughter lives in San Francisco and takes 4.5 hours to reach Yosemite Valley (via Highway 120).
As for spending your time, most of the sights are in Yosemite Valley. If you have time, see Glacier Point, which overlooks the Valley from a point on the south rim.
If you want to see Giant Sequoias, head to the southern end of the Park at Mariposa Grove.
