We are planning a week long trip in late August and am curious about how difficult it will be to get into the Tuolumne campground. I have seen reports of it filling up by 8:30 AM on the weekend, Does it really fill up that fast in late August?

Yes.

People wait in line fairly early in the morning before the kiosk opens at most of the campgrounds in the park. There are campgrounds outside the Tioga gate at Saddlebag and Ellery lakes. They fill up, too. Early is good.

I think you have a good chance. Get there as early as possible. I have stayed there the last week in August and seen empty sites. If it doesn't work out, there are several first come first serve site a few minutes down the road. Saddlebag Lake, Tioga Lake, Ellery Lake, Saw-Mill and Junction campgrounds are all a few minutes past the Tioga Entrance.
