Summer Weekend at Yosemite

Hi, I'm planning on going to Yosemite this weekend. We are driving up there on Friday night, and hoping to find a campsite outside the park for the evening. Do you think we are likely to be able to do this? Also, how likely are we to be able to get a wilderness permit on Sat. morning to camp on the lower part of the Half Dome trail on Sat. night? If that doesn't work, is it very hard to get a first come first served camp site outside the valley? Lastly, if you get a such a campsite, how do you claim it for the night without having to stay there all day? Are there rangers that you sign in with?
Answers to any of these questions would be much appreciated. Thanks,

For July and August, it's unlikely you will find a site.
There are Forest Service and private campgrounds outside the
park, but they are usually full during the weekends.
If you get a first-come-first-served site, you claim it by
putting your tent and belongings on the site and pay for it
(self serve or through the camp host) and put the receipt on the post for the campsite.
It's unlikely you'll get a wilderness permit the same day on a weekend for Half Dome. You can wait in line before they open in the morning for a permit the next day. The area you describe, which is in Little Yosemite Valley, is the most popular for backpacking (and crowded).
Many people hike Half Dome for the day. It's a full day though.
If you're local, I would plan going for just the day or come back after Labor Day. July and August are the busiest times.
