I am taking a trip to South Lake Tahoe to visit relatives in January. We would like to continue on an see Yosemite at that time. We are from the East Coast and don't know much about that area. If we rent a car in Tahoe, should it be 4 wheel drive? what is the best way to get there? Best place to stay not too expensive? how many days do you think we need to see it? what is the closest airport to fly home? It would be a great help to us to hear from people who know from experience rather then a travel agency. thanks.

If you rent a car you MUST carry snow chains. 4WD is not required, as the roads are kept clear most of the time, but I recommend having it anyways. Knowing how to drive on snow is probably more important.

Highway 120 (The Tioga Road), which cuts east/west across Yosemite National Park is closed in Winter. To get from Tahoe to Yosemite you have to cross the Sierra Nevada on I-80. During heavy snow stoms, I-80 may be closed.

The closest airport to Tahoe is Reno (RNO) and the closest major airport to Yosemite is in Fresno, the Fresno-Yosemite Airport (FAT).

Best place to stay is in the Valley. I recommend Yosemite Lodge, which are heated hotel-like rooms with bathrooms (but no TV). Cheaper is Camp Curry, which has heated (and unheated!) tent cabins with common bath and shower houses. Camp Curry is too rough for some people, but the price is right for those on a budget.
