In Spring after Tioga Road and Tioga Pass open, how long will there normally be snow or ice on the pass and road? Are tire chains required for some time after it opens? If so, how long is this usually the case?

The Tioga Road doesn't usually open until mid- or late-spring (that is before Memorial Day, if possible, or before Fourth of July in heavy snow years).

Once the road is plowed, there is NO snow or ice on the road. The heat of the dark asphalt keeps any snow or ice off the road. No tire chains are required--even on opening day.

The road opening is posted on the Yosemite National Park webpage at http://www.nps.gov/yose/ Click on "road conditions."

This is not true for the road closing (usually October or November). Tire chains are a good idea. Also, stopping or parking on the Tioga Road is not allowed in mid- to late-fall.

Good morning

We have clients who have booked holiday to the US

Part of the holiday involves driving from Las Vegas to Death Valley and on to Yosemite - arriving 11 October (Cedar Lodge). Can you please
advise if the Tioga Pass and road will be open. If not what route would
you recommend for my clients and the approx driving distance/time.

Your assistance would be very much appreciated.

I look forward to hearing from you.

The road should still be open by then. It usually doesn't close until November.

Driving across on Rt120 in March
Author: sean (---.avalon01.nj.comcast.net)

I am looking to make a trip from Oakland to Lone Pine and back via Rt 120 to Rt 395 through Yosemite. I am "planning" on making the trip the thrid week in March 2004. Does anyone know if this is feesaible? Will Rt 120 be open all the way across the park at this time? If so will I at least need chains? I am looking at renting a 4x4 so I will need to know this in advance.
Thanks for any help, it is greatly appreciated!

It won't open at least until late May. March will not work, period.

How do you think my route shd be?? I have been searching and find that the Tioga pass entrance would be closed.. How abt Highway 120? Do you think it would be open?
Only on knowing this could I book my lodging.. wht woudl be the alternate route to take?

Tioga Pass (on Highway 120 east) is closed until late May.

Highway 120, from the west (Highway 99) is open all year. It is sometimes closed during snow storms, but I don't expect any to close it now.

Hi,
I saw you reply and thanks for the information. I was indeed helpful!
Our plans are more concrete now. We have decided to drive from Sacramento to Yosemite by 120W and stay at Yosemite valley for a night. Then we plan to drive next day to Lake Tahoe. I was wondering if you could help me with this. I am not sure which part of Lake Tahoe I should select my lodging at , considering I have to drive back to catch a flight from Sacramento the following eve. I only have a single night to stay. I was considering South shore lake tahoe and found a nice lodge iwth lakefront view.
Either i could take the shortest drive from Yosemite and stay at South shore Lake tahoe or could drive further up north. which woudl be easier to get to SAcramento later on. I am NOt planning to gamble.. I just wnat to enjoy the nautre and scenery and do some parasailing or boating activities with my 5 yr old and 1 yr old..

Shortest route from Yosemite to Lake Tahoe

The shortest route from Yosemite to Lake Tahoe is Tioga Road (Highway 120) to US 395 north. This road is only open from late May to early November.

When Tioga Road is closed, take Highway 120 WEST to Highway 99 north, to I-80 east.

Driving time is about 4 hours either way.

The other person says to take I 80; That takes you to North Lake Tahoe; when you get to Sacramento you can take US 50 to South Lake Tahoe...suggest 50 because more scenic and I think Heavenly ski resort and the casino area is better for a view when you get there and you can take a tram to the top of Heavenly from downtown South Lake Tahoe for lunch or just a look.
