I have a group of about 10 people that are looking to do a backpacking trip in early March this year. What kind of snow can we expect? Will snowshoes be a requirement? Are permits required for backcountry camping? Is backcountry camping realistic this time of year?

Thanks,
Brendan

Only if you are snow camping would Yosemite be accessible in March to backpacking. That doesn't mean you couldn't do it with snow shoes, but I don't know about wilderness permits in the winter. Maybe someone else here does.

Even May is snowy in the high country most years, and June can even be cold up there.

Mark is right--it's too cold unless you snow shoe or ski in and bring warm, waterproof gear.

You still need Wilderness Permits in winter, but it's no problem getting them (not many people in the backcountry in winter, except maybe Little Yosemite Valley and along the Glacier Point Road).
