We are planning a trip to Yosemite in Jan or Feb. and wondering what road is the best coming from the south----through Oakhurst or straight across from Modesto coming up the I-5? Do you need chains? If so, are they available along the road--are there people that rent them when needed?
Also, what is the best time to get snow in the valley? Jan or Feb?
Thank you so much, Fredrica

Best route is highway 140. Take the 99 freeway to Merced and head east on 140 to Yosemite Valley. Highway 140 is also called the "All weather highway" because it is lowest in elevation and least likely to be closed from snow or to require chains.

You always need chains in Winter (they are required). You never know when a storm will hit. You can't rent them, but you buy them from local service stations and convenience stores.

Best time for snow is Feb. It's latter in winter and more chance that snow has accumulated. However, Yosemite Valley is low in elevation (4000') so there's a good chance there's little or no snow in the valley. However, there's a free shuttle bus from the Valley to Badger Pass Ski Area.
