We are travelling to Reno about 5/18, I understand that it is unlikely that we can travel by car into Tuolome Meadows at that time, so I have two questions. First, what is the best option to get to the Yosemite Valley from Reno at that time of year. Second, are there outfitters that might take us from the eastern edge of the park into the park proper just to see the winter beauty? THank you. Michael

I-80 is always open, except during some major winter storms.

Highway 4 (Ebbetts Pass) and Highway 88 (Carson Pass) are shorter routes, if open.
You can always check the CalTrans website to see if they are open:

For Tioga Pass (in the park itself), check for Highway 120.

Recommendations in May for Soft Easterners

Hi -

My wife and I are making plans to visit for a couple of days sometime between May 22 and May 30 of 2002. We're soft Easterners, who are looking for a nice hotel or B&B. We'll probably day hike along moderately difficult trails while in the park.

Q. - Is this a good time to come, and can anyone recommend facilities for us?

Thanks a lot for your site, and any info you and your readers can give us would be greatly appreciated.

Chuck

For nice hotels you have the Wawona Hotel in the Southern end of the park, near the Mariposa grove of giant Sequoias. It's the oldest hotel in the park and interesting to visit, but many rooms don't have baths.

In the valley, there's the Ahwahnee Hotel. It's very beautiful and elegant, but expensive ($300+/nite). It has tall windows in the dining room and great room with views of the valey floor and walls.

Less expensive is the Yosemite Lodge, with modern motel type rooms. Camp Curry is a bit more rugged, but cheap.

Reservations in the park are best made well in advance. They are available up to a year in advance. If the dates you want are full, you can often reserve 2-3 weeks in advance because that's when a lot of cancellations occur.

For outside the park, there's beautiful Tenaya Lodge just south of the park or Yosemite View Lodge, with motel-type rooms, just east of the park in El Portal. See
http://www.yosemite.ca.us/lodging.html for details on lodging outside the park.

There is the cedar view lodge on 140 maybe 8 miles outside the park. You can find it on the same website as the yosemite view lodge as it seems to be managed by the same company. It looks nice enough and is considerably cheaper. My son and I will stay there in august.
Hiking in late may you might be limited by the snow but not so much as you would notice .there are many glorious trails which should be open by then.Glacier point to happy isles via the panorama trail is a great way to view the valley for the first time or you could do halfdome from the valley. We made a great day of walking through the sequoias in mariposa grove then going up to Sentinel Dome to catch the sunset,a day I'll never forget despite the modest crowd.have a great trip.
ps I've never hiked the Hetch Hetchy area but it looks very interesting and the snow should be gone.
