We are planning on doing either a 3-day or combination of walk-in/primitive camping 6/30/02. Any recommendations on which section of the park to explore? 2 adults and a 14 y/or ; we're all in good shape, but don't want to do anything really extreme. We'll be coming over from the Big Sur area.

I like the north rim of Yosemite Valley. You can start from one of the drive in campgrounds along the road (Porcupine Flat or Yosemite Creek, for example) and backpack a few miles south. From there you can see the Valley from Eagle Rock, El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, or North Dome (depending on time and interest).

In the high country, you can camp at Tuolumne Meadows. They have a special campground for backpackers (walk in). From there you can head south along Lyell Canyon or head south from Dana Meadows (east of Tuolumne).

Little Yosemite Valley is very popular for first time backpackers. I find it too close to the road and too crowded. It's loud, too many people, and the bears love the area. You are close to Half Dome and have some beautiful scenery in Little Yosemite Valley though.

All these trips need wilderness permits. Bring a bear canister (or rent one) to store food.

Definately Tuolumne Meadows. Try a 7 mile trip (one way) to Young Lakes starting from the Lembert Dome parking lot. From Young Lakes you can hike cross country to Roosevelt Lake, about 4 miles. I've been to Young Lakes several times, but will admit, I've not had a chance to get to Roosevelt Lake.

You can check my website The Backcountry for more ideas on backpacking and day hikes.
