Not many people go in late October. Too early for Thanksgiving or Christmas. It's cold, but little or no snow on the ground.

Campgrounds won't be sold out, although the higher-elevation camps are closed. There be plenty of spaces in the open campgrounds. The Upper Pines Campground is open year around. For details on camping, see http://yosemite.ca.us/faq/

If you're worried about being cold--bundle up. Bring polypro or polyester underwear, coats or jackets, gloves, and a warm hat or cap. Dress in layers.

hey folks,
have you been hiking in yosemite before? could you help us out a bit. we're planning on being there the last week of October. i'm looking all over the net for a nice 3 day hike and I have some questions. maybe you can help, maybe not.
1) is there free/charge transport on the park roads in late october? that means we could do a trail that isn't a loop, start in one place and end in another, and then take a bus back to where the car is. Example: Start in Toulume Meadow and end in Glacier Point.
2) how long does it take to go from Toulume Meadows, over Vogelsang pass, to Merced Lake and down little Yosemite Valley to Glacier Point. It seems like 3 days or a bit more. Or John Muir from Toulume to LYV?
3)Any recommendations for 3 day hikes. Not too worried about the crowds at this time of year so even well tramped trails will do. Not too much snow please!!

regards
Rodd

1) Only for upper Yosemite Valley and another shuttle around Tenaya Lake/Tuolumne Meadows. For others, you pay $$$$. See the Transportation Desk in Yosemite Lodge. One bus goes from the Valley to Glacier Point. Another goes to Tuolumne from the Valley.

2) 3-4 days is about right. No less.
Heading down the John Muir Trail will take 2-3 days.

3) No snow in October, except occasional freak storms that leave a dusting. But still cold. Another recommendation is up Lyell Fork of Tuolumne River to the Park Boundary at Donahue Pass. Scenic stream and small lakes along the way.
