Help with Rockslides Trailhead

Postby gman948 » Mon May 11, 2015 8:39 pm

Hi,

A friend of mine and I are visiting Yosemite this June for 6 days. We currently have a permit to start at the Rockslides Trailhead and end at the Mirror Lake Trailhead via the North Rim trail as shown on Backpacker's website (http://www.backpacker.com/trips/califor ... north-rim/). I have a fair amount of backpacking experience but have never been to Yosemite.

Could someone who has done the Rockslides trailhead before tell me if it is going to be feasible to do with large backpacks on? Will I be able to follow the trail easily? I have a good NatGeo map but should I bring a GPS too just in case?

I realize that there have been discussion posts about the Rockslides trailhead before but I was just looking for some further insight onto how I should prepare for hiking out of this trailhead.

Thanks in advance everyone!!

There is a section of the trail that has been covered up by a rockslide....but from the reports I've seen, you should be able to find your way through that...and find the trail again on the other side, Once past that obstacle, the rest of this trail is extremely well-marked and easy to follow.

And it's a good thing your packs will be lighted at the end of this trip, when you go down the many switchbacks of Snow Creek!

It's not a problem with a pack. Some rock scrambling, but not that much. More of an issue if you have not been there before is make sure you get good descriptions on where the trailhead is since it is not marked and not a regular trailhead...more it is for locals or those who know the park. And...be prepared to get a little lost in the slides ...the trail disappears under the rocks ...you just have to be patient and keep looking.
