Planning for 2016 - Mosquito Forecast

Postby Dave Miller » Sun Jan 10, 2016 10:16 pm

I'm hoping to head out to the high country in Yosemite this summer, possibly, Cathedral Lakes. I'm trying to guage the best time to go and avoid those nasty mosquito storms. I'm assuming that the snow pack will last longer than in recent years. Any thoughts at what this year will be like? My current target is beginning of August.

Thanks for looking and I look forward to your opinion.

September and October work, based on the amount of precipitation we are getting, if it keeps up mosquitoes will be trendy well into August. Still to early to tell, but watch the snow level and precipitation

Typically late July, early August, into September- October. We usually find that as the snow melts off, it's generally fairly clear of the swarms at that given elevation about 2-3 weeks later. Just keep moving and bring some repellent and a head net. There is a lot of snow this year though.

I think Phil is a bit optimistic. The skeeters are fiercest right after the snow melts off....but then slowly decrease in numbers and ferocity after that. grin
