Yosemite first timer, looking at Young Lakes Loop

Postby rshull07 » Tue Jun 28, 2016 2:44 pm

Hey eveyone! My name is Rhett and Im from Atlanta Georgia...Next week my Fiance and I are joining my family for a vacation to San Francisco, and after the 4th my lady and I are headed up to Yosemite to do a little backpacking. We've look all around and have settled on the Young Lakes loop, we dont have permits yet because Im not sure what trail head to use yet. Any tips for an east coast guy backpacking out west for his first time? And anybody done the Young Lakes Loop?

Thanks!

I've done it twice. The best route is via Dog Lake---but your real challenge is going to be getting a permit for one of the most popular hikes in Yosemite. Because of the trail quotas, I would suggest that you go with an open mind, and understand that there are no bad hikes in Yosemite. The rangers in the wilderness office will work with you to get you a permit that will give you some options, but you will need to be flexible about where you want to go.

We have a ton of Yosemite hikes, including the Young Lakes trip, on our website--listed in our signature line below.

Thanks for the reply, I was wondering if the Young Lakes hike was super popular..and Ill check out your site for sure. We're looking for a one to two night trip without any crazy mileage (10-20 would be good) any other suggestions? we'd like to be by water if possible.

My favorite two day trip is to Nelson Lake. You start at the campground and go in through Elizabeth Lake then cross-country from there to Nelson, but it's pretty much a "fisherman trail" sorts. From Nelson, I like to go over the crest to Vogelsang then out to through Rafferty trailhead. This may be a popular route as well, but scenic like all of them.
