And whether it would have made any difference, besides making a case for the dangers and what not to do (ie: foolishly jumping in after someone is swept in, thinking you're somehow going to magically be the one that can outswim the rapids), this also makes a great case for carrying a PLB (rescue beacon), because, realistically, your cell phone is probably just dead weight when it comes to calling for help. And as for the former, a word to the wise...it's sad, it sucks, it's terrifying, it's life-altering, and it defies instinct, but if a friend or loved one goes in, unless you want to become the second death, all you're left with is watching it happen. So, best to understand the dangers and steer clear of getting into that position at all. This is going to be a big year for snowpack, and high water. Smart and careful are the operative words to keep in mind.
