Thanks in advance for the advice.
- Looking to come up from the Bay, Hike Cathedral Lakes and spend the night at a local hotel

Do I need any type of wildness pass ?

Thanks again - sorry for the rookie question

For a day hike, no pass or permit required. For an overnight, yes, you need a wilderness permit.

But, I should add, it's always a good idea to let someone know where you plan on hiking, and when to expect you back.

And just to put your hike into perspective, it's about 3.5-4 miles each way to Cathedral Lakes. The nearest hotels are probably those just outside the Big Oak Flat entrance station, and that's more than one hour away. That's a long day if you drive up the SF Bay Area....especially if you consider that the top of you hike is going to get you within a few hundred feet of 10,000. From sea level to 10K in one day, with a good hike, is a real workout.

That sounds like a better plan--or at least a plan where you'll have more fun.
