First backpacking trip - what to carry?

This is my families first backpacking trip. We are going to Vogelsang July 14th. We will have 2 boys in tow. We are staying and eating at Vogelsang. We want to travel very light because we are not seasoned hikers (weaklings). Will a fleece (50 degree) bag be warm enough for sleeping? Do we need warm clothes (coat?)? Are the mosquitoes bad (need netting or just spray)? Can we carry snacks and put in bear box at camp or do we need a canister? We will be spending 6 days, half in the high country anything we should not miss or should miss? Thanks for any advice, the park site is weak on helping newcommers.

Sounds kind of agressive for a first backpack with a whole family. How about something easier? How old are the boys?

Food canisters are required in Yosemite.

Vogelsang is the high and cold. You need a down or at least a polyester fill bag--fleece is not warm and it is heavy.
Mosquitos are busy in June and July.

The boys are 10 and 14.

So it will be cold, how cold? Just at night or day time also?

Thanks for your advice.

OK--teen and pre-teen sounds better.

It's usually gets down to around freezing at night.

It's about 2000' feet of total elevation gain in 8 miles.

If this is the first time you've ever taken the boys backpacking, I would strongly suggest you follow the basic rules for first timers.

1. Short distances
2. Relatively level (2k over 8 miles is ok although the 8 miles may be too much for a first time!)
3. Let them pick the food including smores for dessert!
4. Don't scrimp on clothes that keep you warm.

I don't know how hardy your boys are or you are for that matter. 8 miles isn't too much until you strap a whole lot of weight on your back and start walking.

Also, make sure the boots you wear are very broken in. I have personally had a trip ruined by blisters.

Best of luck!
