Rescue off North Dome

Postby balzaccom » Fri Jan 18, 2019 4:55 pm

I don't know what these hikers were doing up by North Dome in the middle of winter. You have to assume that they knew it was going to be darn cold, really snowy, and very challenging. And yet they went anyway.

And called for help.

Huge kudos for the CHP and rescuers who managed to get down to these two guys, and then get them lifted off the mountain. That is impressive work.

Here's the story as it appeared in the Fresno paper:

Winter can be a great time to be in the Yosemite wilderness. There's no reason someone who knows what they are doing shouldn't go as long as they have the right equipment and are prepared for any possible weather.

That said...

This week had major storms known well in advance to be coming through and it was not a good idea to be out there.

Without their full story it's hard to really condemn them for being out there, but the weather this week really didn't make this a good time to get too far from the Valley/Badger Pass. The story didn't say if they were day hikers or had overnight gear, but they at least survived one night. North Dome from the Valley in Winter would be a hard day hike, but even that is hard to say without knowing what the ground conditions were Tuesday before the storms hit.
