Sometimes as you go along you can find an eddy pool, behind a big rock or near the shore, to pitch a fly in. If you aren't a dead shot with a fly and bobber tho it's tough.

So much of this depends on the melt and how it goes. Right now I'm just surfing up to the mountains in those brief windows between storms, looking for opportunities to play in the snow.

How does Illilouette in early June seem to you at this point? Snowed in? Buggy? Full of wildflowers? Etc.?

Early June might be when Glacier Point Rd opens. Snow is still up to the webcam, at the moment.

But, snow is melting out, consolidating, starting to dwindle in lower elevations... there'll be lots of water and bugs in June at 7-8k

Coming from the Bay Area to Glacier Point trailhead, which is the best ranger station to pick up our permits from? Yosemite Valley seems closest, but trying to avoid long lines if possible. We'll be leaving the Bay Area at 5 am on a Thursday morning in early June.

It depends on whether you reserved them. If reserved you can pick them up at Big Oak Flat / 120 gate, Wawona, or in the Valley wilderness center. If walk in, the valley is the only place to be for Glacier Pt to LYV. If taking other trailheads on Glacier Pt Rd you get walk ins at Wawona.

Thank you for sharing the information really appreciate your feedback. I have two young boys, thus I'm only afforded four days to go backpacking each year so I really want to dial it in

FYI, it's snowing again... may want to wait for it to stop snowing to dial it in.

Thanks. I do have a reserved permit, so looks like the answer to my question is Big Oak Flat as that's the first one we'll come across. Btw, my trailhead is Glacier Point and googlemaps has me going to the Yosemite Valley Trailhead parking lot https://www.google.com/maps/dir/San+Mateo,+CA/Glacier+Point+Trailhead,+California+95389/@37.7373219,-119.5828286,15.29z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x808f9e60efa95545:0xfd8efcf42dcc1ba7!2m2!1d-122.3255254!2d37.5629917!1m5!1m1!1s0x8096f244177fdfc9:0x518feab9690bf427!2m2!1d-119.5733003!2d37.7285414!3e0 and somehow flying up to Glacier Point. This isn't right, is it? Maybe it's thrown off by the current road closure. I'm thinking Big Oak Flat Rd. to Wawona Rd. to Glacier Point Rd.?

You are correct. The "Glacier Point Trailhead" in Yosemite Valley is the trailhead to HIKE to Glacier Point (which is actually the 4 mile trail--currently closed). Your trailhead is located AT Glacier Point. Note that from SFO, it might be quicker to drive south on 99 and then in through highway 41...although Google recommends the route through Big Oak Flat

Thanks! You're suggesting turning south onto 99 from 120 East? Out of curiosity, what is the official name of my trailhead at Glacier Point?

First, you'll need to determine if the Big Oak Flat permit station is even open yet. If not, the Valley Wilderness center.

Secondly, I'll bet you get stopped cold at the crossing of Illilouette. That water channels down through there, and with 150% of normal snowpack, as well as the vast tributary area of both that and Buena Vista Creek just up a ways, that water will be fast and at least waist deep, if not more. So, plan to either backtrack up to GP on the way out, or suffer the swampy conditions and go up through Mono Meadow.
