3 Day Trip in Early October, Route Questions

Postby andykee » Thu Jul 10, 2008 3:35 pm

I am debating between 2 routes for a 3-day backpacking trip in the beginning of October.

Would like to do either do:

1. Tenaya to Clouds Rest to Sunrise Creek
2. Sunrise Creek to Half Dome to Lake Merced
3. Lake Merced to Tenaya

or

1. The Valley to Half Dome
2. Half Dome to Clouds Rest to Sunrise Lakes
3. Sunrise Lakes to Tuolumne

My question is, if I take the second route, will I be able to get from the meadows to the valley in October? It looks like summer shuttle service ends in September, but the winter schedule doesn't kick in until November...

Hmm... You can't park your car overnight on 120 after Oct. 15th so
it may be really a pain to get back to your car... service may be non-existant. I would not plan on it.
I would definitely do the loop back to Tenaya. You will not see alot of
people out and about that late in the hiking season.
With the loop you have many options.. (skip Merced Lake, go up JMT,
take high trail, go up Merced River Canyon, go up Echo Creek).
You may be able to do CR/HD/JMT to Sunrise HSC and out in 2 days
if need be (did it but the person I dragged along wasn't too pleased).
Shortest Route is approx 25 miles.
If you can do it do CR/HD/LYV/Merced River Canyon/Merced Lk/back to Echo /up to Sunrise HSC/Sunrise Lakes/out. To me this is THE best loop
you can do in the park IMO. (37 miles).
You best be in good shape to do it in 3 days though... :)
Have fun
