Yosemite 1st timer hike & camp

Postby Gi Jay » Mon May 06, 2019 8:22 pm

Hi there, I'm flying in from Australia to SanFan & hiring a car - from what I gather its around a 4hr drive to Yosemite?

Q1 - I'm having difficulties trying to get any sort of camp pass, I'll be there 11th August & was going to wing it if I can't get through ( has anyone done this ? )
from the website it looks like I can only apply on 15th of each month from 7am?

Q2 - Would 7 nites be too long to spend there ? I will have a hire car of some sort.

Q3 - What is the best way to attack the park so I'm not backtracking around the park?

Q4 - Anyone else heading that way & want to share car / fuel - August 11 - 17th

A few thoughts to get you started:

Yes, about 4 hours from SF to Yosemite by car.

Yes, campsites in Yosemite Valley are hard to get. But there are other options in the Park: Hodgdon Meadow and Crane Flat, Tuolumne Meadows, etc, where you can often get a campsite if you arrive early in the day on a weekday. Friday and Saturday nights are tough. PM me if you want other ideas.

Day hikes? I'd suggest one day for Vernal and Nevada Falls, one day for Yosemite Falls. One day for Glacier Point and Wawona Grove. Two days for day-hiking in Tuolumne Meadows: Gaylor Lakes Lembert Done, Cathedral Lakes, Mt. Hoffman, etc.

And a massive one day hike to either Half Dome or Clouds Rest.

There's a ton of suggestions on our website...in my signature linr
