What to do w/ bear can on day hike from a backpacking camp

We are going to do a day hike up to Clouds Rest and back from Sunrise Lakes next week. We have BV450 for food. Is it ok to leave them at your camp while you go off and do an adventure or do you need to take them with you? If you leave them (away from tent of course) what are the odds that a bear will mess with them and move them off somewhere? Is there a trick to make them stay put or do bears just pass them by? Wondering if Yosemtie bears have seen these so much now they just ignore them? We don't want to get back to camp and find out we can't find our dinner! thanks

Take the bear can out of your pack and leave it away from your tent. With luck it will be right where you left it when you come back. No tricks, though. Don't leave it near a cliff or moving water...bears may mess with it a bit, but you don't want to have them toss it over the edge or knock it into the river and have it float away.

Balzaccom gave you the basic words of wisdom, but since you also asked about the can staying put, I figured I would add a couple cents.

While you might be tempted, don't try to wedge the can in anywhere like between logs or rocks. Except for over cliffs and into water, you want it to be able to travel around. If you wedge it in, the bear can stomp it or have better luck getting its teeth into it because it's fixed in place. And yeah, up there, you can almost bet it'll get checked out.
