one night backpack suggestions?

Hi...I'm impressed with the posts here. Hope someone can help me out. I'm planning a trip Sept 7-9, staying the first night in a campground (Tamarack Flat probably), then hoping to hike a minimal way in for a one night backpack somewhere. off Tioga Pass road. It seems like a lot of the popular trails are already reserved. I'm not super strong, and would like to be up out of the trees if possible - hiking 4 miles or less (less is better), doesn't have to be to a lake, but does need to be somewhere where we can camp. Ideas?

Thanks!!

What I hear you say is:
1) I want something easy.
2) I want a view.

To get "out of the trees" entirely would take more effort than I think you
want to put in.

I guess then my suggestion would be Lower Cathedral. It's < 3 miles and
can have great views of both Tenaya Lake and Cathedral Peak.
If you get your permit on a Monday there is decent chance...

May Lake is only 1 mile. Nice Lake view. It's pretty simple so you
could drop your pack, setup camp, and then attempt Mt. Hoffman.
(you'd be out of the trees then!) This may be too much for you though???
(the Hoffman part)

If you start at Yose Crk. Campground, you can hike down the creek
until you find some nice spot with a view. This is pretty easy.. I have
seen people with babies camping here... These sites are before you
pass the stream...

Glen Aulin PASSTHRU... you can hike beyond Glen Aulin... and then
when you hit the California Falls (or before) start looking for a nice
spot with a view... this again may be too much for you though...

Alot of people love Lyell Canyon... that is in the trees. but you need only
walk out to the river for nice views.

Those are my suggestions. Look them over and go into the permit
station with a number of options in case stuff is not avail...

Have fun

In reguards to getting a permit; make sure to get to the permit station the day BEFORE you plan to go in. This will give you a much bigger set of trailhead options. Otherwise, you may wind up with my old stanby when the trailheads are full....Ten Lakes (which does have some nice views, but is not exactly easy.)

Have fun, you can't go wrong in Yosemite!

Easy, less than 4 miles

Relatively easy, scenic hike / less than four miles: Cathedral Lake. If you can't get a permit for that one, consider the first Sunrise lake. The trail is shorter, but steeper. Total elevation gain is only 1,200 feet (vs. 1,000 feet for Cathedral), but it all comes in one big climb with lots of switchbacks. But once you get there it's well worth the climb.

I would go to North Dome. It's about 4.5 miles off the Tioga road and pretty flat all the way there. Only a little up and down. I have a podcast called Beautiful Places In HD that you can find on iTunes or by going to beautifulplaces.tv There is an episode on North Dome.
