Getting on in years...sigh

Postby balzaccom » Mon Sep 21, 2020 10:13 am

I spent this last weekend working on projects around our cabin in the Sierra...

Since we only go up for a few days at a time in the winter, we don't need that much wood...but we still haven't burned up all the wood we created by cutting down a few dead trees and rebuilding parts of the deck. And over the years it had grown into a mass of a mess. So I pulled out everything from the woodshed and put it back into place. What fun.

And once I did that, I also took a few hours to dig some larger beds in front of the cabin where we can plant some groundcover---all part of making the place look a little more like part of the living forest, and a little less like a desert compound.

So imagine my delight when i started doing a few stretches this morning and felt a pop in the back of my leg as I pulled a hamstring muscle. I haven't done in nearly fifty years---and that was back when I was playing very competitive soccer.

So now i get to loll around and do very little. Just what the doctor didn't order for someone my age. As a dear old friend of mine liked to say: "Getting old sucks. But it beats the alternative." Sigh.

Right there with you... every year I seem to get a little slower and more likely to say ouch when I stretch... seems like that's the only time I hurt myself.

Might be time to make friends with a few 20somethings. :)

Ah GeeZ, come on... Getting old is not for sissies, but tough it up.... LOL  Been lucky enough to not have your injury, and it is luck
At 72 I am in a Big Sur Virtual Marathon Challenge since they cancelled the actual Marathon, including 2021. So they have 5K(completed) 12K, 11 miler, 21 miler and the marathon to be finished by the end of October. Then 7 of us that have run every year of the Big Sur Marathon are going to do all 26 miles from Big Sur to Carme on Hwy 1l so we can say the Grizzled Vets(Those that have run all 34 years) can continue our streak.
Plus I had a couple of trips planned with people that have never been to the park. But with all the fires/smoke that is not looking good.

I recently turned 59, but life since my early 30s has been all about pain management. I was never addicted in any way, but I used to live on Vicodin after having most of L5-S1 removed, now I live on Ibuprofen by the handful. I've always lifted and worked hard, and now with the fire recovery, I'm bucking logs, hauling debris, and remastering the chainsaw. So far, so good, BUT, as I was walking into the bathroom a few weeks back, just took a quick little twist to the left side to grab a pair of underwear off the arm of the couch while I was on-the-fly, and now I can't feel my left leg much at all. So, the moral of the story is, if you spend most of your life in figuring out how to control pain, and have a lot you want or need to do, you just kind of have to tough it out. Some people would probably say it builds character but, assuming it's not just numb, it sure does suck. I'm not sure if I feel sorriest for myself and those who live in pain, or those that have never really had to deal with it, and are now getting older and being forced to figure it all out from scratch. Blessings and curses............name your poison.
