...WETTER AND SIGNIFICANTLY COOLER WEATHER ON THE WAY...

A weather pattern change remains on track with much cooler
temperatures and periods of rain and snow showers. Here are the
highlights:

Temperatures (high confidence):

High temperatures 10-15 degrees below normal today through
Saturday. Overnight lows this weekend will be near and below
freezing for suburban and rural valleys, with Saturday night into
Sunday morning looking to be the coldest night.

Freeze potential increases as an even colder air mass drops into
the region Monday-Tuesday. Widespread hard freezes are looking
highly probable (80-90% chance) by Tuesday morning, October 12. It
may be time to say our final goodbyes to what remains in our
gardens.

Rain and snow (first system medium confidence, second system low-
medium confidence):

Confidence is increasing in the chances for rain and high
elevation snow showers tonight into Friday. The best chances for
wetting rains will be along the eastern Sierra into western
Nevada along and south of I-80. Several inches of snow will be
possible for higher elevations in the Sierra.

A second colder system will drop into the region Monday-Tuesday
with snow levels falling to all valley floors. There is still a
wide range of possibilities in the simulations where the best bet
for precipitation will be, but be prepared for at least some light
snow showers "down here" Monday.

Wind (medium-high confidence):

While we could see periods with increased breezes through Friday,
there are no signals for any strong wind events. Winds will be
lighter over the upcoming weekend before increasing again Monday
and turning northerly.

...ACTIVE WEATHER THIS WEEKEND INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK...

An active pattern will persist into next week. Quieter weather is
expected by mid to late next week.

* The next, stronger storm will push into the region late Monday
into Tuesday bringing another round of beneficial valley rain
and mountain snow.

* Saturday`s storm will exit the region in the evening; however,
residual light rain and snow showers are possible into early
Sunday morning. Travel over passes may be slick with snow
overnight. Please see the Winter Weather Advisory for additional
details concerning travel in the Sierra.

* The best chance for rain and snow will be late Monday into
Tuesday. The bulk of the precipitation is forecast for the
Sierra with light rain spillover possible into western Nevada.
Plan on periods of less-than-ideal travel conditions across the
Sierra passes due to snow and slick road conditions.

* Gusty winds will continue to be a concern, especially for
aviation travel. Winds will increase ahead of the storm Monday
into Tuesday with the strongest winds likely to be late Monday
night. Potential impacts include: travel restrictions due to
gusty crosswinds, hazardous conditions on area lakes, and
aviation turbulence. There is a 20% chance that damaging winds
(60+ mph) may surface in wind-prone locations. It is time to
secure or gather up previously wind-tossed items.

Be sure to keep tabs on the forecast if you have travel plans over
the weekend into early next week, especially if traveling in the
Sierra.
