overnight parking at glacier point in july?

Postby gregor » Tue Feb 17, 2009 3:15 pm

I just got my reservation for a week in July at the upper pines campground. Now i was thinking of one day driving my rental car up to glacier point and hiking down the panorama trail to our campsite, then the next day take the shuttle to camp 4 and hike up the 4 mile trail. I'm wondering if there is anywhere i am allowed to park a car overnight at or near glacier point?

Also is there any way to get to the top of el cap for a day hike?

Hi. Actually you can leave your car overnight RIGHT at Glacier Pt.
It is a trailhead. In Yosemite they do not issue parking permits
for overnight trips so it will be fine to leave your car overnight there.
If someday everyone and their brother has the same idea as
you things may change... but that is very unlikely.
Leave your car overnight there and don't worry... it will be there
when you get back. (just don't leave any food in it)

For El Cap. A few ways to get there in July.
1) Yosemite Falls trail to El Cap and back
2) Tamarack Flat TH
3) Old Big Oak Flat Rod TH
4) Rockslides
5) Yosemite Creek

Not matter which way you go it will be strenuous... 16 miles is minimum.
The easiest way is probably from Yosemite Creek... 10 miles 1 way.
Shortest is Yosemite Falls trail (8 miles 1 way).
And if you want to "see over the edge" it's 500ft. elevation loss from
the top where the trail is.

Another option is you can take the daily tour bus to Glacier Point. It leaves each morning from the Yosemite Valley hotels. No car shuttle or overnight parking necessary.

thanks guys. I think we will probably do the car thing, only because we are going to have a rental car that won't be getting much use while we are there. Might as well use it since i'm paying for it instead of paying for the shuttle for two people if it's not an issue to leave the car there, then that's what we'll probably do.

Thanks for the tip on the El Cap hike, it will probably not happen. I'm trying to keep to 10ish mile days except for the day to the top of half dome.
