Have reservation dates for Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne!

I now have confirmation on my reservation!

Entry Date: 6/22/09
Entry Trailhead: Glen Aulin-> Cold Canyon/Waterwheel (pass through)
Exit Date: 6/26/09
Exit Trailhead: White Wolf-> Pate Valley

Tentative plans:
6/22: Camp in Glen Aulin proper just before California Falls (7+ miles)
6/23: Camp just before Muir Gorge or after, Register Creek? (7+ miles)
6/24: Camp Pate Valley environs (6+ miles)
6/25: Camp Morrison Creek (5+ miles)
6/26: Hike out to White Wolf CG (5+ miles)

I reckon the above schedule will give me plenty of play time along the trail,
but then hopefully all the above will be forgotten within my first few steps on the trail..

I have been backpacking for many decades throughout western USA, Latin America, Asia, Australia etc.
(mostly a mosey meanderer these days :-))
This will be my first trip to Yosemite since I was just a babe and only remember because of stories and a couple pictures.
I have been and I am reading guide books, pouring over maps, etc.
Have yet to decide which John Muir book would be appropriate to bring along.

Any and all advice, ponders and ideas are greatly appreciated!

Thank You,

RW

Nice!

The Yosemite.

I really like My First summer in the Sierra... but I'd go with
"The Yosemite".

You're gonna love the GCT.

Random Walker,
Are you and alias for Robert Duvall?

Just asking, love the reference to napalm. My deet works like napalm. Bought it in Louisianna, eats right through plastic.

Hey Heybooboo,

Nope, not an alias for Robert Duvall, though he sure played that part well, and playing Major Frank Marion 'Ferret Face' Burns in MASH was outstanding,
then of course there was his role as Arthur 'Boo' Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird and True Grit and THX 1138 and etc.

Wonder if he has ever wandered Yosemite?

Pondering possible trail conditions and a decision on whether to wear my Merrell Chameleon Wrap's or my Montrail Torre's.
Advice is nice!
Thanks,
RW

I don't wear boots anymore unless I'm snow shoeing...

bill-e-g,
What do you wear on your feet, trail running shoes or the like?

I guess they call them cross training shoes.
There's alot of good stuff out there nowadays.
I highly recommend a shoe with a Vibram Sole.

I've used: Merrell Moab (both models gore-tex and non).
Right now I'm using the Merrell Radius which I'll use until Summer
when there is less water and snow to deal with.
Then back to the Merrell Moab's.

These are similar to the Chamelleons.

I find that I'm quite comfortable with these shoes with food enough
for 7 days. If you have an REI give them a try. If you find
you don't like them you can always return them.
For me the shoes are just so much more comfortable.
I haven't had any issues with ankle support. I even got the wife
to move from boots to shoes and she feels the same way
as I do.

What is your total average backpack weight for 7 days?

My guess for packweight (and it's only a guess) is about 35 pounds
for a 7 day trip.

Just the food with bearcan and water gets you probably > 15 pounds.
(figure maybe 2lbs of food/day) (and I only carry 1 litre of water)

Been meaning to figure out what everything really weighs...
I'll post a gearlist and weights if I remember later...

I don't want to disagree with Bill, but the GCT is one place in Yosemite I might think twice about not wearing boots. The GCT is low 5500 to 6500.
There are rattlesnakes. I saw 4 in one day one time. But if you feel comfortable then go for it. Just watch where you put your feet.

bill-e-g,
Thanks, this might be the hike where I step from light hiking boots to cross trainers.
I reckon my backpack weight for 7 days is nearly about the same as yours.
I went through my stuff a few years ago paying much attention to each item, weighing it etc.
Now I just heft, average, ponder, reckon, then go backpacking.

gwegan,
4 in one day, nice!
I have not seen a rattler since I moved back home from New Mexico.
But then I spent most of last year on the wet side of the cascades.

Bill,
I'd like to see what your pack weight is. That's something I've been meaning to do, accurately weigh everything in the pack and see what it all is. This season I'm trying to focus on going lighter and covering more ground. I definitely think a thread on that would be worthwhile. Its always nice to see what other people are using and what gear they like and don't like.

Unfortunately, due to the chance of rain (not a big deal) but the chance of overtime at work (that is a big deal to me) I had to call off the trip out to Kibbie Ridge.

Gear List... it's on my todo list...
I'm also continually trying to lighten my load...
but, alas, I cannot not take all my gadgets which are close to 5 pounds...
I'm working on the spreadsheet...

check this guy out... he's outta control... met him once...

he has some gear lists... and he'd still think I'm nuts for carrying
an Archos 604 PMP...

oak... can you comment on the "Miwok"... so I at least know you read it..??
