Looking for Feedback -- 4 Days in Mid/Late June

Postby Darwin » Sat May 02, 2009 11:51 pm

Heading out with a group of seven the third weekend in June. Current itinerary is as follows:

DAY 1: Tuolumne Meadows to Glen Aulin to below Waterwheel Falls
DAY 2: Glen Aulin to Sunrise Lakes (via Murphy Creek Trail)
DAY 3: Sunrise Lakes to Cloud's Rest to JMT/Cathedral Lakes
DAY 4: JMT/Cathedral Lakes back to Tuolumne Meadows

I have several questions. First, I've heard there are a few spots to pitch a tent below Waterwheel Falls. Any suggestions/recommendations...?

Third week of June, what's the likelihood of being eaten alive by mosquitoes...?

The biggest unknown for me is Day 3. Unfortunately we have to leave early on Day 4 (want to be back to TM by around noon), so I thought we might make as much progress back toward TM as possible on Day 3.

Any recommendations as far as where to make camp off the JMT...? Will it be too far/too ambitious to make it all the way up and back around to Cathedral Lakes...?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

With a group of seven my personal feeling is that you are just being
way too aggressive in your planning. Just too many miles for each day.

This is what I would recommend you do:
Day 1: TM to Glen Aulin. Camp near California Falls or even closer to
Glen Aulin HSC. Dayhike to Waterwheel falls and back.
Day 2: To Sunrise
Day 3: Leave stuff at Sunrise Lakes. Dayhike Clouds... come back..
pick up gear... Head to Upper Cathedral
Day 4: Out to TM

That is still about 45 miles.

You're covering alot of altitudes... so expect mosquitos... be very prepared...

Thanks, Bill.

That's a good call -- to day hike CR, rather than make the loop around.

Ideally I'd like to stay away from the Glen Aulin HSC. Are their any good places to make camp below it...?

Also, any recommendations as to where to make camp at Sunrise Lakes...?

There are alot of place to camp below the HSC. I just wouldn't take
your group all the way down to Return Creek... cause then you
have to climb back up with your packs...
Just start looking once you get past the HSC. If you can forgoe the
campfire then your choices expand greatly...

Your 2nd day may be too much for some in your group. There
are a number of spots to camp at the first lake.

I'm not entirely sure you will be on the up and up with your route.
Technically you are exiting the wilderness and re-entering at
Sunrise. Sunrise is one of the most popular trails in the park.
Just not sure what they will say when you tell them your entry
and exit Trailheads.
I did the same thing last year up Snow Creek and then up Cathedral
but that was self-registration time.
Just not sure. I mean, I'm certain I could hike down the Tuolumne
and then up Murphy Creek and then up Sunrise in day.... esp if I dropped
most of my stuff off at the Sunrise TH and then picked it up on the way by.

Just wanted to give you a heads up on that just in case.

Although I guess if push comes to shove you might be able to get
two permits at once. Anyway... just don't know that one.
I think you'll be ok... just not positive...
