on the nps website it says the backpackers campground is open from july to september. is there no camping there during june, and if not where can I camp in tuolumne in early june?

It opens when the rest of the Tuolumne Campground opens. It may open earlier than July 1, or it may not. There's less snow this year, so it will open earlier, although early June is pushing it. Otherwise, try the Forest Service campgrounds east of Tioga Pass or the lower elevation campgrounds such as Hodgdon Meadow.

so where can I camp in tuolumne if I'm arriving on a sunday, and don't plan on hiking til monday?

You might want to wait and see if Tioga Road is even going to be open in early June... hard to do any hiking if you can't get to the trailheads. I hope you can navigate in snow, there's a lot up there still - was looking up the valley from Glacier Point today.
