Question about hiking Tenaya Creek/Cathedral Lakes area...

Postby SAFNYC » Tue Jun 02, 2009 7:49 pm

If I am at the west end of upper Cathedral Lakes, is it possible to follow Tenaya Creek west all the way to Tioga Road? There is no marked trail on the topo map but it seems like an easy shortcut to back to Tioga Rd.

Thanks

Maybe someone has done that and will chime in... but I would guess (if I am looking at the same little blue line on the topo as you) that if they did, it involved climbing gear.

Huh? Upper Cathedral? Tenaya Creek from Upper? Huh?

This doesn't make sense.

It won't save you time but it looks like you could drop down to
Lower Cathedral and make you way to Pywiack Dome without
too much issue if the creek isn't screaming and you can get into
the trees below the outlet.
Definitely iffy on the outlet of Lower Cathedral though..
you may have to head way around NW and loop back around
due to some sheer faces.

The trail from upper to Tioga is a mere 3.5 miles so you
certainly are not going to save any time. You do this because
it is "fun".

It's not too complicated. Maybe I did not explain it well enough.

If I am at Cathedral Lakes, I want to know if it's possible to follow Tenaya Creek (west) under Pywiack Dome to Tioga Rd. Is that area passable without climbing gear?

Tenaya Creek runs parallel to the road. Technically that would mean the answer to your question is no.... I was guessing you meant one of the outlet streams from one of the lakes, and the ones I see go down some steep terrain. It's no significant savings on distance. I would take the trail rather than risk ending up at the top of a granite slide.

Do you mean the OUTLET of Lower Cathedral?
The Outlet of Lower is NOT Tenaya Creek.

If so I answered that above.
