How much water to carry daily?

Postby DanTheMan » Wed Jun 10, 2009 9:33 am

Hello all!

We'll be starting a 4 day hike on June 27-July 1. We're going from TM to YV.

Here's our itinerary:
Day 1 - TM to Sunrise HSC
Day 2 - Sunrise to Clouds Rest
Day 3 - CR to Half Dome (Camp at JMT and CR trail junction)
Day 4 - HD to YV.

My question is... how much water should we plan on carrying daily given the trail we're taking? I'm sure there won't be too much of a problem with water availability but I just want to make sure we have enough water for cooking at camp but also don't want to carry too much.

I know Sunrise will have water, so I'm not worried about the first night. I'm curious about the other nights.

TIA!

Assuming you have a filter, there is water available in many spots for you to refill. I personally would have the ability to carry at minimum 100oz per person.

I'm looking at my topo maps and I don't think you'll go more than 5 miles in between water refill options.

I personally never carry more than 1.5 litres on trail. More like 1 litre.
There is water everywhere.... All year...
When I know I'm close to where I'm gonna camp then I'll fill up a
2 litre Platypus bottle and have a total of about 3-4 litres per person
for dinner and bkfast the next day.

Are you camping ON clouds rest?
If so then you need to fill up at the creek before going up and
then your next reliable source will be the CR/JMT trail jct.

Please if camping on clouds... leave no trace...
so that they will continue to allow camping on clouds rest

IDK if we'll be camping ON Clouds Rest. Any suggestions as to where to camp? I was thinking we'd continue on past CR to spend the night.

If we did stay on CR  ...we won't leave a trace!

We have a filter so as long as we have a water source we'll be fine.

Any idea if we would have issues crossing some of those streams on the topo map? I don't have a sense as to how big they really are.
