Identifying this particular site in Yosemite

Postby dan » Wed Dec 02, 2009 6:11 pm

(I'm posting this for Pellegrina - Dan)

For future travel reference I would like to find out exactly where in Yosemite this photo of my Dad was taken in 1966

if anyone has a similar picture of this area, knows the location,
or can reference it on google maps for me, that'd be great!

many thanks, Pellegrina

I'm just taking a wild guess but I think that is in front of Half Dome. It looks like the face on the right side. There is a white and dark coloring on that rock which looks similar to where the markings are on Half Dome.

That's a great shot of Ahwiyah Point below Half Dome.
It's definitely taken from Mirror Lake. That rock could be the
monstorous rock that is in Mirror "Lake". Not 100% sure of that.
You should be able to find the exact rock next time you are there.

Although you might find that the background looks a little different now---there was a rock slide in that area a year or so ago...and it left a significant white smear down the slope.

Here's a few pictures of the big rock in Mirror Lake. Looks like a close match. Or it could be another rock near the lake:

I looked at some pictures of myself and others jumping off the big rock at mirror lake from the last few years and it looks identical
