How to Start Half Dome Hike?

I want to start hiking half dome at 6:00 am or 7:00 am. I read the shuttle from Yosemite Village doesn't start running until after 8:00 am. And the road to the trailhead is buses only.

So... do I start my hike from the parking lot and walk the extra 2 miles (4 roundtrip, on top of a 17 mile hike, that's 21 miles round trip?) I'm dayhiking up and back, so its a big question!

Thanks from Washington, D.C.!

If you want to enjoy the hike, I'd start early too. It's worth the extra walk.

You can park in the Curry Village parking lot (or adjacent apple orchard, for overflow parking). You don't have to be staying overnight to park there. It's an extra 1/2 or 3/4 mile (depending on what end of the lot you start) you'd have to hike to Happy Isles, but it's worth it. Also, there's a lot fewer people before the shuttle starts and it's nice and cool for hiking.

I would start even earlier... about 6:00 AM if possible. The walk on the road (from the parking lot to the trailhead) is really flat and actually kinda nice... it gives you a chance to eat and warm up.

Parking at Curry Village is a good idea because when you get done with the hike... the pizza parlor and burrito place is right there by the parking lot. We always make it tradition to get pizza and beer when we complete the hike.
