Bad Weekend to Hike Half Dome?

Postby mck28 » Tue May 20, 2008 5:03 pm

Hi! I've been waiting to hike half dome for the first time. I chose Memorial Day Weekend despite the crowds. Should I cancel my trip based on the weather reports that this weekend will have rain on Friday and 30 to 40% thunder storms of Saturday and Sunday? What do you think? Don't people fall on half dome cables due to rain?

Thanks!

30-40% chance of thunderstorms is bad--I would wait. If you're in good shape and start early (pre-dawn), you can get up there in the morning before the crowds arrive. Thunderstorms usually don't occur until the afternoon, but if there's a storm system coming in, all bets are off.

People slip on the cables more to carelessness than rain, but rain certainly doesn't help on that slick granite, especially with people wearing sandals and slick-bottom sneakers.
