Thanks, Dan. Apparently the paper got the story wrong about the road being closed. Do you know if the rental car companies are concerned about their cars going into the park; what with the bears and all?

No, rental car companies are not concerned about cars going into the park because of bears.

You should not leave any food visible in your car.

The only restriction I know of is to stay on the paved roads. Most all park roads are paved.

A friend went to Yosemite and a bear trashed a car near his in the park bcasue he had some sun tan lotion in a bag in tha back seat and it broke in to eat that!

The BBC have a programme on (www.bbc.co.uk) Thursday about the bears in Yosemite and the problems they cause.

How common is this? Food is easy to control but toiletries as well!?!?

Anything that smells, sunscreen, chapstick, perfume. Also anything that looks like it contains food, such as a cardbox box or ice chest (even if empty). Put it all in the trunk. Covering with a blanket is the next best thing, but hiding in the car trunk is best. I think they call a car trunk a "boot" in the UK?

That right, and in the UK the biggest predator is a squirrel!

Always after your nuts though.
