water filter from '96- used a few times> can i still use it

Postby ctfshjohn » Sun Jul 17, 2016 10:58 am

not wanting to gamble here but i have had this pur explorer, used it once back in 1996, cleaned it properly before storage.

it has a level of protection as a (1) on the manual.

the cartridge seems clean but its old, do i need to replace it?

also has a carbon filter at the end of output hose which seems fine too........

the cartridges / unit itself are discontinued i believe , unless someone here knows where i can get one???

thank in advance for any info, i will need to use it in sept.

Test it out a few times and find out. Re-hydrate it first. if it pumps, give it a couple weeks after you take it into the field, and if you get Giardia, you'll know it didn't work.

Kind of scary that they call it a "vintage" model, huh? Like something you carried back when we had to walk to school 6 miles uphill both ways in the snow.

I believe it would be fine, and I would use it if I really needed to, there's really nothing there that can "go bad". However, I'm guessing that thing weighs close to a pound? Why not lighten your load and easy your worries with one of these: https://www.rei.com/product/890900/sawy ... ter-filter Weighs 2oz and takes up very little space, it's even cheaper than a replacement cartridge for your filter would be. If you're going with a group they make larger sizes also (platypus also makes a similar though costlier system).

Those Sawyer Minis are about $20 at Walmart, and usually in stock at most stores.

BTW, I have no affiliation with REI or Sawyer, it's just a good piece of gear.

That design was taken over by Katadyn. You might take it to REI and see if the Katadyn Hiker replacement cartridge fits into it. They are available everywhere. REI, Campmor, etc.
