Camp 4 availability in February

Postby calebzierke1 » Thu Feb 09, 2017 8:40 am

Hello!

A few friends and I are planning our first trip to Yosemite next week over Presidents Day weekend. Is anyone here familiar with Camp 4 enough to know if it usually fills up on the weekends in February? From the research I've done, it sounds like it might only be in high demand during the warmer months. We would probably be arriving at the campground around noon. If at all possible we don't want to arrive that day and not be able to get into a campsite because everything is already filled up.

Also if anyone has any advice or tips for first-time Yosemite campers, it would be very appreciated!

Thanks!

The car campgrounds are probably not full, either. There's snow everywhere, the roads are experiencing landslides and washouts, at the moment the only way into the park is through Wawona on the 41 and that's the route you will most likely be required to chain up when it's snowing, which has been happening on and off for weeks.

There have been evacuations due to threat of flooding, when a storm hits. There are flood warnings right now.

Another several feet of snow is predicted to fall in the high sierra -- another foot expected in the valley this weekend.

Hope you are prepared for all of this, plus sleeping out in a tent when temps are in the teens. Probably a lousy time to visit if you are also first time campers...

Here's a look at the kinds of things going on in the immediate vicinity, with roads and weather.

If you do go, the pertinent camp 4 info is at https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/camp4.htm .
