JMT walk-up permit help?! Group of 3 from UK

Postby AdamGecko » Thu Apr 06, 2017 1:52 pm

Hi there,

Were a group of three guys from the UK and we really excited to hopefully hike the JMT this summer from the 5th of August to the 30th... We missed out on the permit reservations but we wanted to know whether we can get the walk up permits from Tuolumne Meadows. I hear they issue 10 a day however as we are going to be in peak times would it be sensible to get there the day before and wait outside the office over night. We are willing to do nearly anything to get these permits as we have already booked our flights! Just wanted to know what the situation is like and how likely we will be able to hike the JMT this summer! We hope to leave through Whitney portal if that is any help??

Many thanks for any help you guys have!

You need to be there at 11 am the day before you want to start hiking. That is when walk ins start. The day before. I recommend being there first thing in the morning, the day before you want to start, so at 10 am when they start to give away same day permits that were reserved by other people then abandoned (if you do not pick up a reserved permit before 10 they are recycled and handed out to others) you have a chance of starting the same day. Then if that does not work you get a second chance, at 11, for permits for the following day. Then the next morning you get those same two chances again.

Since reserved permits are frequently abandoned, a party of 1-3 has a fairly decent chance at success, particularly if you show up midweek.

They really do not want people camping outside the office overnight.
