Shuttle service to Mariposa Grove from the Valley

Postby damir » Mon Mar 16, 2009 7:30 am

Hi.

Apparently, it is impossible to visit Mariposa Grove from the Valley unless you have a car, even in summer. I see there is a round-trip service from Wawona to the Valley, but not the other way arouns.

Is this true? I was really hoping to see those sequoias... :(

Nah. No Problem. There is a shuttle bus.

And.... it's free!

There's a shuttle bus inside Mariposa Grove (cars are not allowed in the grove) that leaves from the Mariposa Grove parking lot, and it cost money. Or you can hike from the parking lot into the Grove. But there's no free daytime shuttle that leaves Yosemite Valley in the morning and returns the same day.

There is a guided tour that leaves from Yosemite Valley and heads to Glacier Point and Mariposa Grove:

Oopsie... my humble apologies...

You can get from Wawona TO Yosemite Valley and back.
But not the other way around. Go figure.

You'll want to look into the Hiker's shuttle to Tuolumne Meadows.
You should be able to get off at Crane Flat and then hike to the
Tuolumne Grove. The Mariposa Grove is much bigger but at least
you'll get to see a number of big trees.
Maybe they will even drop you off right at the Tuolumne Grove.
Although you may be "stuck" there all day (you should be able to
check out the Tuolumen Grove w/i a few hours)

Sorry about any misinformation...
I take public transit in the Bay Area but not in Yosemite. :)

Yeah.. I saw this and couldn't believe it. Not a single Valley-Wawona-Valley route. I thought I was being mistaken, but apparently I'm not. :(

Oh, so there are sequioas in the Toulumne, too? That's great news.

Thanks for all the info. Cheers!

Sorry again. The name is misleading.
It's the Tuolumne Grove. Not in Tuolumne Meadows.
It's near Crane Flat which I mentioned in the post.
Unforunately the grove is still a long distance from Tuol. Mdws. or
any other trails you probably want to explore.
What I'd recommend is that you go ahead and take that bus to
Crane Flat. Enjoy the experience. Then... as you see people
getting into their car ask them where they are going and
tell them your story and where you want to go. My bet is that
you'll get a ride without too much issue.

There are 3 Seq. Groves in Yosemite:
Merced Grove
Tuolumne Grove
Mariposa Grove
Take a look on the big park map and they should be well marked.

One thing you may want to do is climb from Sunrise Trailhead to
Clouds Rest. This is do-able as a dayhike. If you are thinking this
also think about just hiking back down to the Valley. All told it is
about 15 miles. It may actually be easier than climbing Half Dome
from the valley since it's all downhill after climbing Clouds and it's
not nearly as much elevation gain as HD.
Just throwing it out for you since I know how it is to go on vacation
w/o a car. No idea your fitness level. On this trek your knees
may be crying from going from clouds (9800) to valley (4000).

Anyway, your on vacation. Have fun.

Well I'm in pretty good hiking condition, but I don't know about my fiancee.. we planned to stick with medium/slightly difficult trails.

Thanks for the suggestions. We still have time to sort things out.

Cheers!
