Favorite Place in the Park?

Postby bill-e-g » Tue Apr 07, 2009 5:36 pm

Other than the Valley.

This is an incredibly difficult question IMO.

My answers would be:
- Favorite Feature : Matthes Crest followed closely by Starr King
- Favorite Peak : Volunteer
- Favorite Meadow : Rodgers
- Favorite Lake : Kibbie (Benson got spoiled by a-hole Log cutters!)

As for favorite place:
Would have been Benson if not for some people...

So I'm gonna have to ask the wife. She might say Bernice.

What's yours?

Ouch. This is hard.

Favorite feature? Cathedral Peak? Conness? Lost Arrow?
Favorite Peak--see above...
Favoriate Meadow--much underrated, the Yosemite Valley floor. Not near enough people actually get out into it and really enjoy it. Then again,. maybe that's good...
Favorite Lake...hmmmm. Lower Ottoway this year. Wonderful.

Lyell fork of the Merced.

Unbelievable views, great camping, good fishing, and solitude!

Lyell fork of the Merced.

Lyell fork of the Tuolumne River--scenic canyon with great views behind toward the head of the canyon.

Lyell fork of the Tuolumne is pretty nice but I'm talking of the Lyell fork of the Merced. X-country hike off the upper rim trial to near the base of Mt Ansel Adams.

I'd have to say the stretch of the Tuolumne between Glen Aulin and Waterwheel Falls. The back-to-back waterfalls and cascades are just awe-inspiring to me.

I've only been up to around Hutchings Creek... twice... :)
(incredible flow that year and had to scope out a crossing...)

Have you been to Harriett Lake?

Bill,
I didn't get to explore the area as much as I wanted to as we were on a very long loop hike. We left the trail and went upstream (of the Lyell Fork) to the meadow areas and found a very nice campsite. We then had to leave the next morning to keep on schedule.
The alpenglow on the surrounding peaks that evening was incredible...seared in my memory forever!

Whe I got home I found an old picture on the net of Ansel Adams, Georgia O'keefe and friends in the same campsite we were in!

I also had a crazy experience there. We were breaking camp in the morning, thinking how cool it was that we hadn't seen a soul in 2 days, and this old man walks up. He was wearing tattered jeans and an old button up shirt. The only thing he was carrying was a half loaf of bread and a small water bottle. He sad he had just scrambled over the ridge between Mt Lyell and a neighboring mountain. Incredible! We later laughed about seeing the ghost of John Muir!

I definatly want to get back there again and explore that area some more!
