Short backpacking trip guidance

Postby desmoines12 » Sun May 10, 2009 4:21 pm

I have not done the planning that I should have, and would love some suggestions for a shorter backpacking trip starting tomorrow (monday, may 11). I had hoped to show up and ask at a visitor center/ranger station for some guidance like I have at my home parks (Olympic and North Cascades), but it sounds like I should have made reservations and had a solid plan already, but any help is appreciated. I'm looking for a 2 or 3 night hike, not lots of snow, mostly on trail. Mileages in the range of 10 per day, without tons of elevation (maybe 4,000 feet per day or less). Is it possible? What would you suggest? Is it likely that I can just show up and make a plan from a registration point? Thanks..

Well.. this is probably too late...
but go up the Merced River as far as your legs will take you...
The falls are screaming right now... just spectacular...

And don't worry about not having a plan or anything.. it seems
noone that goes there does... (ok, I'm being a cynic here)
(I had to wait an hour to get a permit on Friday and there were
only 2 people in front of me in the line) (argh!)

I highly doubt right now a permit will be tooo big an issue...
but it WILL get CRAZY very very soon...
