Dayhiking & bears

Postby thepurpledragon » Sun Jul 08, 2007 7:09 pm

I am a first-time visitor who will be day-hiking alone. How "crowded" are the trails? Do I need to sing or make noise (to warn the bears I am coming so I don't surprise them) or will there be enough people around that the bears pretty much stay away from the "popular" trails? I am in good shape and want to be able to put together 8-12 mile dayhikes. Thanks in advance for your advice!!

Black bears aren't as aggressive as the Grizzly Bears found further north, and are not as large or powerful. Black bears are usually nocturnal.

Bears like to use the same trails as humans (and have their own trails). I would just keep my eyes peeled and if I see them keep a distance and enjoy seeing them. Don't get between cubs and their mother. Bears have always ignored me on the trail, but I never approach them.

If you're still concerned, talking or singing scares them away. Bear bells are not effective, as the sound only carries a few feet. Souvenir shops still sell them because they still make money off them.
