Easy Backpacking in June Yosemite

Postby Lesbert » Sat Apr 16, 2011 4:04 pm

We r interested in camping (not car camping) in Yosemite in June.
Does anyone know where we could find an easy backpack spot. We have an 11 year old (good hiker) and are just new to backpacking rather than car camping. Or even "primitive camping" where we can park and hike in even just 1/2 mile away from crowds, but still use our car to explore - that is an option too. Thanks.

You aren't going to get away from crowds half a mile in, and you can't camp there either. Most trailheads demand that you are 2 or 4 miles from the trailhead and at least a mile from any road.

Also, the question you should be asking is are there any snowless backpacking routes in June... there probably won't be.

Car camping and day hiking sounds like it will be better for you if your 11 year old can't go more than two miles at a stretch.

If it weren't also going to be snowed in as well, I would suggest finding a national forest trailhead, like Saddlebag - the ferry could get you across the lake and it's fairly easy hiking. But it is on the other side of Tioga Pass, which isn't likely to be open until late June.

Or you could stay at the Walk-In campsites at Hodgdon Meadows....which are only about 150 feet from the cars...

Or just read a good mystery novel set in the Sierra; https://www.amazon.com/Danger-Falling-Rocks-Paul-Wagner/dp/0984884963

Thanks - 11 year old hiked upper yosemite falls with no problem ..mileage
is not really an issue -- just trying to enjoy yosemite without the crowds.
Wasn't really liking the car camping spots in the valley - likely anywhere else even car camping will have snow, like at glacier point road, yes?

It depends on what you mean by crowding. For some of us, 5-20 people is a crowd, and leaving them behind means getting two or more days from a trailhead. If you mean the hordes of people and lines of cars in the valley are crowds, and not a few dozen hikers, pretty much any trail that is not Happy Isles/Mist trail will do.
