YV to Tuloumne Meadows shuttle

Postby kentmo » Sat Mar 03, 2012 1:09 pm

Hello all. Thanks to a LOT of information from this forum (and other resources), our September trip was FINALLY materializing. However, I'm having a hard time finding transportation options. The plan was to park our car in YV, camp, shuttle to Tuolumne Meadows, and through-hike back to the Valley Floor (via Elizabeth, Nelson, Bernice, etc.). Sept 5-13. Is there a shuttle option that any of you folks are aware of for this itinerary?

Thanks,
Kent

There is no free shuttle but you can check on the YARTS schedule and the hiker bus (a tour bus, from the valley to Tuolumne Meadows, but the driver will drop you at the trailhead of your choice). Make reservations for the hiker bus by visiting yosemitepark.com - it's run by DNC. YARTS you can visit yarts.com and check the schedule - you just need to be at the bus stop of your choosing with cash in hand, amount depends on the length of your ride.

YARTS is the regional transportation system for the greater Yosemite area. Not free, but they take you from Merced and Mammoth to Yosemite.

The YCS Hiker bus drops you off along the Tioga Road if you want to hike down to the Valley without leaving a car:

The Glacier Point tour bus effectively does the same thing, but you also get tour guide service along the way up. And they only drop you off at Glacier Point (where you can hike down a few ways)

Just a heads up... The hiker bus to TM runs July to Labor Day.
Labor Day is Sept. 3 this year... so it may not work for Kent.

My 2 cents for Kent is... first time in the park... just stick to the trails with the backpack on...
and dayhike off trail if that is your cup o tea. (first it was Tenaya Canyon... now it's Nelson)
(but, ok, yes, Nelson IMO is not really a true xcountry) but.. unless you go back to Eliz... it is.)
Have fun

Thanks. I realize I've been all over the place on ideas, including Tenaya. Tenaya just didn't work logistically with any loop ideas, especially with the needed gear. With the lack of post-Labor Day shuttles, we've decided on a Tuolumne loop, clockwise, starting with Nelson Lake, down along Merced, and up via Cloud's Rest and out Sunrise Lakes. We'll likely find some good little side-trips, as bill-e-g mentioned.
