Hodgdon Meadow accessible trail/hike to Carlon Day Use Area?

Postby jplee3 » Thu Jul 19, 2012 10:38 am

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone knows if there is a trail or way to hike to/from Hodgdon Meadow campground and the Carlon Day Use Area in Stanislaus NF. I came across this and was very curious:

Looking on Google and Bing maps also seems to show a 'road' but it's not discernible from the aerial/satellite view (maybe it's shrouded with tree cover)

What's really confusing is that on Google maps, it's labelled "Hodgdon Meadow Access Rd" -
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Yosemite,+CA&hl=en&ll=37.800163,-119.858469&spn=0.004764,0.010697sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=39.047881,87.626953&t=h&hq=Yosemite,+CA&z=17

While on Bing, it's labelled as "Old Big Oak Flat Rd" though, which I think is correct (per the flickr photo description above). I was confused at first because the 120 is called "Big Oak Flat Rd" lol.

Anyway, I'm looking for a nice and relaxing local hike - it seems the Carlon area is only a few miles away at most. And the biggest thing, for me at least, is the fishing that I plan on doing there :)

Look on Google Maps. You can:
1) take Tuolumne Grove Road west to Highway 120 from the Campground to Evergreen Road (just outside the entrance), or
2) head east on Tuolumne Grove Road to an old, closed road just to the east. That's what you call the "Hodgdon Meadow Access Road", which is not open to the public IIRC.

I'm not sure what you''re trying to do though.

Don't confuse the (new) Big Oak Flat Road, which is also Highway 120 to Crane Flats, with the Old Big Oak Flat Road, a mostly closed road (except for a stretch that heads to Tamarack Flats Campground.

Here's a map showing the old and new Big Oak Flat Roads (and a lot of other historical roads and trails):

Thanks Dan!

I think we'd probably be looking at Option 2. On Bing maps, it shows up as "Old Big Oak Flat Road" which supposedly is what the guy who posted those pics on Flickr rode his bike on. We're basically trying to get to the Carlon Day Use Area (off Evergreen Rd) by foot and trail rather than by car (which would be accomplished via option 1). I actually called the Groveland ranger district and spoke with someone about access to the day use area. She said it looks like it's possible to get to the Carlon area from Hodgdon Meadow via that trail (Old Big Oak Flat Rd).
